A stair lift carries one person along the staircase. A home lift carries people and whatever they are holding between floors. They are not really competitors, and which one suits you depends on your staircase more than on your budget.
What a stair lift actually is
A seat on a rail, fixed to the stair treads or to the wall. You sit, you ride up at walking pace, you get off at the top. There is no shaft, no pit and no machine room, and a straight rail can usually be fitted in a day.
For one person who struggles with one flight, nothing else is that quick or that cheap to install.
Where stair lifts struggle in Pakistani houses
- Turns cost money. Staircases here often have winders or a mid-landing turn. A curved rail is fabricated to the shape of your stairs, and it costs several times what a straight one does.
- The seat takes stair width. On a narrow flight, everyone else edges past the parked chair.
- It moves a person, not a load. Luggage, a water cooler, a gas cylinder, a pram or a wheelchair still go up by hand.
- Fixings need checking. Rails bolt into treads or walls. Marble treads and hollow block walls deserve a structural look before anyone quotes.
- Ask who services it. If the unit is imported, find out who holds the spares and who comes out when it stops with someone sitting in it.
When a stair lift is the right answer
One straight flight, one user, nowhere to put a shaft, and help needed now. Or a temporary need, after surgery or an injury, where the lift comes out again in a year.
If that describes your house, a stair lift is the sensible buy, and we will say so at the survey.
When a home lift makes more sense
More than one floor to serve, more than one person using it, something to carry, and a plan to stay in the house. A lift serves the whole household, including guests, children, a parent with a walking frame and the weekly shopping, which a stair lift never will.
Two of our models suit houses that were not designed around a lift. AirRail uses a railing system that removes much of the civil work an enclosed shaft needs, which helps where space is tight. Metalux Pro is usually the most affordable of the four, because a steel-panel cabin prices below a glass one for the same travel. What actually drives the price covers the rest.
Comparing the two on cost
A stair lift is quoted as a machine plus a rail. A home lift is quoted as a machine plus the structure, the civil work, the wiring and the commissioning, which is why the two numbers look so far apart. The fair comparison is what each one solves: one flight for one person, or every floor for everyone, for as long as you live in the house.
What we make, and what we do not
We do not make stair lifts. Vertico builds four home elevator models at our own works in Karachi, for buildings up to G+3.
That makes us the wrong people to sell you a stair lift and the right people to tell you whether your house needs one at all. We would rather spend a survey finding out that a lift does not fit than sell you one that does not. Book a free site survey and we will measure what you have.
